Wooden Derrick Cafe Casper WY: Best Breakfast Downtown

If you’ve spent any time driving across Wyoming, you’ve seen them — those skeletal steel towers rising out of the sage, the quiet workhorses of Casper’s oil patch. A derrick is the tower over an oil well, and tucked into downtown Casper, there’s a breakfast spot that wears that heritage on its sleeve, its menu, and pretty much every corner of the dining room. The Wooden Derrick Cafe isn’t trying to be trendy. It’s trying to feed you well, fast, and with a wink toward the roughnecks and toolhands who built this town. Spoiler: it succeeds.

I’ve been making excuses to drive to Casper for breakfast at this place since they opened back in November 2019, and last summer (July 2025) they pulled off something even better — they moved into the historic Woolworth building on East 2nd Street. More room, more light, same menu, same heart. If you’re hunting for the best breakfast in Casper WY, this is where I’d point you first.

The Vibe

The new location at 128 E 2nd St gives the Wooden Derrick the space it always deserved. The Woolworth building has bones — high ceilings, big windows, that warm downtown-Casper hum where you can hear the morning crowd murmuring over coffee and the cook calling tickets in the back. The oil-field theme runs through everything without ever tipping into kitsch. It feels like a working person’s diner that just happens to live inside a piece of Wyoming history.

It’s the kind of place where you’ll see a table of guys in Carhartts next to a family with a toddler smearing syrup on the booth, next to two retirees sharing a paper. That’s a Wyoming breakfast spot doing it right.

A note on service: most of the time it’s friendly and quick — servers Misty and Angela are local favorites for a reason, and if you get one of them, you’re in good hands. I’ll be honest, though: every now and then you’ll hear someone mention being left standing at the host stand for a beat too long, even with open tables. It happens. It hasn’t happened to me enough to dim my enthusiasm, but I’d rather you walk in with realistic expectations than be surprised.

What to Order

Let’s get down to it, because this is where The Wooden Derrick earns its keep.

The chicken fried steak — the one they call The Derrickman — is breaded in-house, and you can tell. There’s no bag-mix shortcut here. The crust has that uneven, hand-coated texture that fries up crispy in patches and tender where the meat meets the breading. If you’ve ever cooked one yourself in a heavy cast iron skillet, you know exactly the look I’m talking about. This is the dish that put downtown Casper breakfast on my map.

The biscuits and gravy (order the Chainhand if you want eggs alongside) get my vote for the best in town. The biscuits are tall and tender, the gravy is peppery and generous, and the whole plate doesn’t feel like it was assembled — it feels like it was made. If you want to try making biscuits at home, a good biscuit cutter set is the right place to start.

If you’re hungry-hungry, The Roughneck is the move. Three eggs, your choice of meats, hashbrowns, and pancakes. It’s a platter that takes up most of the table and somehow feels like a deal by the time you push the plate away. Filling and worth every penny, as more than one regular has put it.

For lunch, the Shaleshaker burger is the regulars’ pick — juicy, properly seasoned, and a solid contender in a town with serious competition. If you’re doing a Casper food crawl, pair it with my round-up of the best burger joints in Casper and make a day of it.

Now, the green chili. The Wooden Derrick makes their green chili in-house, and you can pour it over your eggs, your scramble, or — please do this — their fries. The green chili fries get rave reviews and they should. If you’re a fellow chile-head, you already know the gospel of a Wyoming green chile cheeseburger, and this kitchen is fluent in that same language. Want to stock your pantry with Hatch green chiles? Amazon carries them year-round.

Save room — or don’t, and order one to go — for the apple or lemon turnovers. They’re a weekend highlight, flaky and not too sweet, the kind of thing that makes you wish you lived close enough to make it a Saturday habit.

And the coffee’s hot and keeps coming in a proper diner mug, which is all I really ask of a breakfast spot.

The Full Picture

The Wooden Derrick is open 7 days a week, 7 AM to 2 PM — breakfast and lunch only, no dinner, no late-night. The kids’ menu runs $6, which in 2026 dollars is a small miracle and gets called out in nearly every review I’ve ever read. The salad bar is all-you-can-eat, which is unexpected and welcome at a place this breakfast-forward.

Has there been a slight quality bobble since the move? A handful of regulars have mentioned it. That’s normal anytime a busy kitchen doubles its square footage overnight. The vast majority of folks — me included — still walk out happy, and the core menu (the CFS, biscuits and gravy, green chili everything) hasn’t lost a step.

Who’s it for? Families. Solo travelers passing through on I-25. Oil-patch workers grabbing a real meal before a long day. Anyone who wants downtown Casper breakfast done right without a 45-minute wait or a $22 omelet.
